From the Studios Exhibition at the Peninsula School of Art

Peninsula School of Art

On December 5th, I gave a juror talk on the works selected for the From the Studio Exhibition at the Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek, Wisconsin. In addition, I selected three artists to receive 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards. This exhibition displays 31 2-D and 3-D works from 21 artists. From the Studios is now on view until February 27, 2021.

Jurying an exhibition or selecting award recipients are never easy tasks. There are so many things that go into selecting and curating an exhibition like this. I often think about what is the artist saying through the art? In what way is the artist making a connection between the art and the viewer?  As I look at a specific piece of art, what type of response am I experiencing?

In this exhibition there is a wide range of subject matter, media, processes, and artistic vision. My goal was to put together an exhibition that demonstrates a variety of art that ranges from traditional to contemporary practices in our Wisconsin art landscape. The work that artists are creating right now are ‘historical’ works of art.

A Sense of Place

Over the past 10 months, art has become a way for us to cope with this pandemic that we are living in. It is a time for us to express and share our feelings and thoughts. A time to daydream of being able to see others face to face. A time to look forward to a new day full of hope and optimism.

What we need right now is a sense of belonging, a sense of community, a sense of place. This is what I hope people will take away from viewing this exhibition“.  – Frank Juarez, juror
